Importing and exporting text from Hemingway
Hemingway Editor is used to draft and especially to edit your writing. Thankfully, it's easy to get writing into and out of the editor, so it's easy to integrate into your workflow.
Delete any existing text to get started
If it’s your first time opening Hemingway Editor Plus, you’ll see sample text in the center of the screen outlining our editing highlights. If you've used it before, you'll see the last text you edited with the app.
Select all this text and delete it to start a fresh document.
Importing text into Hemingway
There are three ways to get text into Hemingway:
- Pasting text
- Importing a file
- Writing in Hemingway
Pasting text into Hemingway
Want to edit text you started in another program? Copy your text and paste it into the center text box with one of these methods:
- Click into the editor and then use the keyboard command for pasting (Ctrl+V on Windows or Command+V on Mac)
- Right-click on the editor and choose “Paste”
- Click into the editor and then use the Edit menu at the top of your browser and choose to Paste
Importing a file into Hemingway
Premium feature
Hemingway Editor Plus allows you to import the text from Word documents (.docx), Markdown files (.md) and HTML files (.html). Just follow these steps:
- Click the File button in Hemingway’s top toolbar.
- Select Import File from the list.
- Click the Choose File button from the pop-up window in the center of the editor.
- Select the file you’d like to open from your computer’s file browser. Your file will need to be a .docx, .md or .html file.
Writing using Hemingway's distraction-free mode
Want to compose a document without seeing Hemingway’s stats and highlights? Just click the Write button in the top right corner of the Editor to toggle on our distraction-free writing mode. You can click Edit to toggle highlights and stats back on at any time.
Exporting text from Hemingway
Hemingway Editor Plus allows you to export your text as a Word document (.docx), Markdown file (.md) or as HTML (.html). Just follow these steps:
- Click the File button in Hemingway’s top toolbar
- Select Export File from the list.
